Pengertian reported speech atau indirect speech ialah bentuk kalimat yang digunakan untuk mengungkapkan sesuatu yang telah diucapkan oleh orang lain.
Selanjutnya kalimat bentuk indirect atau reported speech seringkali mengalami beberapa perubahan dari bentuk aslinya, sehingga informasinya menjadi lebih jelas bagi pendengar.
Adapun bentuk kalimat langsung (direct speech) yang dapat berubah menjadi kalimat tak langsung (indirect speech) di antaranya:
1. Statement (pernyataan)
Kalimat pernyataan atau statement jika bisa kita rubah menjadi kalimat tak langsung dengan menambahkan kata say / said atau tell / told.
Agar kalimat menjadi lebih mudah untuk dipahami dan sifatnya mengalir, kita juga dapat menambahkan penggunaan kata that sebagai kata penghubung (pronoun).

2. Command (perintah), Invitation (undangan), request (permintaan)

3. Yes/No Question (pertanyaan bentuk ya/tidak)
Kalimat langsung berupa pertanyaan dengan jawaban ya/tidak (yes/no question) dapat kita ubah menjadi reported speech. Caranya hanya dengan menambah kata if atau whether.

4. Information Question (pertanyaan informasi)
