Narrative text adalah jenis cerita karangan fiksi yang sengaja dibuat dengan tujuan menghibur pembaca. Biasanya kita menjumpai teks naratif dalam bentuk dongeng, cerita rakyat, dan beberapa bentuk cerita fiksi lainnya.
Sedangkan tujuan umum teks naratif adalah untuk menghibur pembaca melalui cerita. Sajian cerita dalam narrative text terjadi secara berurutan yang mengarah pada satu klimaks dan berakhir dengan penyelesaian.
Generic Structure Narrative Text
Secara umum, sebuah teks naratif memiliki generic structure / struktur umum yang mengikat. Adapun generic structure narrative text terbagi menjadi 3 tahap, yaitu :
1. Orientation
Pada bagian orientation pada sebuah narrative text berisi pengenalan tokoh-tokoh yang terlibat dalam cerita. Selain itu juga membahas latar belakang tempat dan waktu cerita mencakup aspek siapa, apa, kapan, dan dimana.
2. Complication
Complication merupakan tahapan di mana mulai muncul permasalahan-permasalahan yang harus diselesaikan oleh tokoh utama pada cerita narrative.
3. Resolution
Resolution merupakan tahap akhir cerita narrative text. Pada tahap inilah masalah yang muncul pada tahap complication diselesaikan oleh tokoh utama cerita.
Pada bagian resolution juga biasanya dicantumkan moral value atau nasehat. Kita juga mengenalnya dengan istilah Coda.
Karena terkait dengan cerita fiktif atau dongeng, maka secara tata bahasa / grammar, kalimat-kalimat yang tersusun menggunakan bentuk Past (lampau).
Semua bentuk tenses lampau, baik Past Perfect, Past Continuous, Past Perfect Continuous, maupun Past Future Continuous dapat kita pakai.
Meskipun demikian, aturan-aturan ini tidak harus menjadi acuan karena tenses mengacu pada situasi dan kondisi kalimat.
Ciri-ciri Narrative Text
Selanjutnya, kita perlu mengenal ciri-ciri narrative text. Ciri-ciri narrative text inilah yang membedakan narrative text dengan jenis-jenis teks bahasa Inggris lainnya.
Adapun ciri-ciri narrative text di antaranya sebagai berikut.
1. Menggunakan Action Verb dalam bentuk Past Tense.
Contoh kata kerja aksi berbentuk Past ini di antaranya: said, wondered, walked, wrote, cooked, cleaned, dan sebagainya.

2. Menggunakan kata benda (Noun) tertentu
Teks naratif menggunakan kata benda tertentu sebagai kata ganti orang, hewan, atau benda tertentu yang terdapat dalam cerita.
Contoh: the princess, the girl, the queen, the king, the gladiator, the illusionist, dan sebagainya.
3. Memakai Adjectives yang membentuk Noun Phrase.
Contoh: The red riding hood, the poisoned apple, dan sebagainya.

4. Menggunakan time connectives dan konjungsi
Untuk mengurutkan serangkaian kejadian-kejadian, maka digunakan time connectives dan konjungsi / kata hubung (conjunctions). Misalnya: before, after, then, next, soon, dan seterusnya.
5. Memakai Adverbs dan Adverbial Phrase
Sedangkan untuk menunjukkan lokasi kejadian / peristiwa maka menggunakan Adverbs dan Adverbial Phrase. Contoh: on the sea, in the mountain, there, happily ever after, dan sebagainya.

The Legend of Malin Kundang

A long time ago, in a small village near the beach in West Sumatra, a woman and her son lived. They were Malin Kundang and her mother. Her mother was a single parent because Malin Kundang’s father had passed away when he was a baby. Malin Kundang had to live hard with his mother.
(Events)
Malin Kundang was a healthy, dilligent, and strong boy. He usually went to sea to catch fish. After getting fish he would bring it to his mother, or sold the caught fish in the town. One day, when Malin Kundang was sailing, he saw a merchant’s ship which was being raided by a small band of pirates. He helped the merchant. With his brave and power, Malin Kundang defeated the pirates.
The merchant was so happy and thanked to him. In return the merchant asked Malin Kundang to sail with him. To get a better life, Malin Kundang agreed. He left his mother alone. Many years later, Malin Kundang became wealthy. He had a huge ship and was helped by many ship crews loading trading goods. Perfectly he had a beautiful wife too. When he was sailing his trading journey, his ship landed on a beach near a small village. The villagers recognized him. The news ran fast in the town; “Malin Kundang has become rich and now he is here”. An old woman ran to the beach to meet the new rich merchant. She was Malin Kundang’s mother.

She wanted to hug him, released her sadness of being lonely after so long time. Unfortunately, when the mother came, Malin Kundang who was in front of his well dressed wife and his ship crews denied meeting that old lonely woman. For three times her mother begged Malin Kundang and for three times he yelled at her. At last Malin Kundang said to her “Enough, old woman! I have never had a mother like you, a dirty and ugly woman!” After that he ordered his crews to set sail. He would leave the old mother again but in that time she was full of both sadness and angriness. Finally, enraged, she cursed Malin Kundang that he would turn into a stone if he didn’t apologize. Malin Kundang just laughed and really set sail.

In the quiet sea, suddenly a thunderstorm came. His huge ship was wrecked and it was too late for Malin Kundang to apologize. He was thrown by the wave out of his ship. He fell on a small island. It was really too late for him to avoid his curse. Suddenly, he turned into a stone.

The Legend of Puteri Mandalika and Nyale

Once upon a time, there was a king who ruled in Teberu Lombok, who had a beautiful daughter called Puteri Mandalika. Because of her beauty, princes and kings from other kingdom around Teberu wished that she would be their wife. Six of them came to Teberu and ask for her hand of marriage. They were Prince Bumbang, Prince Aryo Johor, Prince Singa Trasak, Prince Daria Loka, Prince Gunung Piring and Prince Bungsu. Each prince wanted to win the hearth of Puteri Mandalika.

Her father, the king of Teberu, was very confused and did not know what to do. If he chose one prince instead of another then it would create jealousy and there could be war against his kingdom. All the princes were handsome and powerful and so the king allowed his daughter to make her own choice. But Puteri Mandalika was confused too and she also knew the dangerous risk that her kingdom and people would get, if she chose either one of the princes.
After several days of serious thinking, Puteri Mandalika met her parents and asked her permission to announce her decision in front of all the princes and the people of Teberu the next day in the beach. Early next morning, everybody gathered on the beach. There was a gentle breeze with small waves breaking softly across the shore. Everybody was looking at Puteri Mandalika, waiting for her announcement.

Meanwhile, the six princes prayed in their heart that he would be the chosen one. Then in a loud and clear voice, Puteri Mandalika Said, ”Oh my beloved mother and father, all the princes and especially the people of Teberu Kingdom. Today I would like to announce that I will not give myself to any one of the princes, but rather to all people of Teberu and my own kingdom.” Then Puteri Mandalika threw herself into the sea from the top of a hill and disappeared. Everybody desperately search for her but she could not be found and people believed she was transformed into flowing sea worms called “nyale”.

The Lion and The Mouse

Once when a lion was asleep, a little mouse began running up and down upon him; this soon awoke the lion, who placed his huge paw upon him, and open his big jaws to swallow him.
(Events)
“Pardon, O king,” cried the little mouse, “Forgive me this time, I shall never forget it; perhaps I may be able to do you a good turn some of these days.”
The lion was so tickled at the idea of the mouse being able to help him. Then, he lifted up his paw and let him go.

Sometime after, the lion was caught in a trap. Some hunters, who wanted to carry him alive to the King, tied him to a tree while they went in search of a wagon to carry him in. Just then, the little mouse happened to pass by and see the sad plight in which the lion was. The little mouse went up to him and soon gnawed away the ropes that bounded the king of the beasts. Soon after the little mouse had finished gnawing away the ropes, he asked the lion to run away.

The Rats and The Elephants

Once upon a time their lived a group of mice under a tree in peace. However, a group of elephants crossing the jungle unknowingly destroyed the homes of all the rats. Many of them were even crushed to death.

Then taking of rats decided to approach the elephant’s chief and request him to guide his herd through another route. On hearing the sad story, the elephant’s king apologized and agreed to take another route. And so the lives of the rats were saved.
One day elephant-hunters came to the jungle and trapped a group of elephants in huge nets. Then the elephant king suddenly remembered the king of the rats. He summoned on of the elephants of his herd, which had not been trapped, to go seek help from the king and told him about the trapped elephants.

The rat’s king immediately took his entire group of rats and they cut open the nets which had trapped the elephant’s herd. The elephant herd was totally set free. They danced with joy and thank the rats.

Cinderela

Once upon a time there was a girl name Cindrella. She lived with her bad step-mother and two step-sisters. She had to do all the household chores.
(Events)
One day the king invited all the ladies in the kingdom to go to a ball (pesta dansa) in the palace. He wanted to find the Crown Prince a wife.
The step sisters went to the ball that night with their mother. Cindrella was left alone. She cried because she actually wanted to go to the ball, too.
Just then a fairy godmother came. With her magic wand, she gave Cindrella a coach (kereta), two horses and footmen. She also gave Cindrella a lovely dress to wear the ball and a pair of glass slippers. She told Cindrella to come home before midnight.
At the ball, Cindrella danced all night with the Prince. The Prince fell in love with her. At midnight, Cindrella ran home. Unfortunately, one of her slippers slipped off at the door. She did not have time to put it back on. The Prince was sad as he could not find Cindrella again that night.
The next day, the Prince and his men brought along the glass slipper. They went all over the Kingdom to search for the owner.

After searching for along time, finally, they came to Cindrella’s house. The slipper fit her. The prince was very happy to find Cindrella again. They got married and lived ever after.
