The Incredible 10-Month Journey Behind Kurzgesagt’s 2025 Human Era Calendar
Celebrating 200,000 Years of Human History
It’s been an incredible year for the team at Kurzgesagt. After 10 months of meticulous research, detailed illustrations, and tireless effort, they’ve finally unveiled their latest passion project – the 2025 Human Era Calendar. This stunning calendar not only celebrates 200,000 years of human history, but also serves as a daily source of inspiration for Kurzgesagt’s growing community.
The Ambitious Vision
The idea for this calendar had been brewing for years. Kurzgesagt’s creators had long wanted to tell the story of the great journey that took their ancestors from Africa to find new homes across the planet. These were the curious and incredibly brave humans who ventured out into the unknown, paving the way for future generations.
Capturing 200,000 years of human history on just 12 pages was no easy feat. It required weeks of sketching, revisions, and meticulous planning to ensure they got it right. The team knew they had to do justice to the incredible adventures, hardships, and achievements of their ancestors.

Diving Into Research
In January, as Kurzgesagt was releasing their first video of the new year, the team was already hard at work brainstorming ideas for the 2025 calendar. They dove headfirst into research, reading about the pioneering humans who ventured out into the unknown.
“We read about curious and unbelievably brave humans who ventured out into the unknown, paving the way for future generations.”
These stories of exploration and discovery were fascinating, but the challenge was fitting them all onto the 12 pages of the calendar. The team spent countless hours carefully selecting the most impactful and representative moments in human history.
Bringing the Calendar to Life
As the research phase progressed, the team began the process of bringing the calendar to life through their signature illustrations. This was no small task – each page had to capture the essence of a pivotal era in human history, from the earliest migrations out of Africa to the modern age.
The team spent many weeks crafting these epic illustrations, ensuring they were worthy of representing 200,000 years of human history. They had to get it right, down to the smallest detail. The adventures, the hardships, the incredible achievements – it all had to be conveyed through their art.
“We had to get it right – the adventures, the hardship, the incredible achievements.”
In May, the team reached a major milestone when they completed the final piece of the calendar – the cover. As always, they wanted to represent the entirety of the human era, so they added 10,000 years to the Common Era system, making it the “1225 Human Era Calendar.” This final touch was the perfect way to encapsulate the scope of their project.
Sharing the Passion Project
Throughout the year, the project continued to develop, with exciting updates shared with the growing community. In March, a new video game called Starb Birds was announced, developed in collaboration with TUC Interactive. This was just one of the many updates and behind-the-scenes glimpses provided as the project took shape.
One of the highlights of the year came in May, when a powerful video about smoking had a huge impact, inspiring many viewers to quit smoking for good. Nothing could have been more rewarding than seeing the positive influence on people’s lives.
“Smoking is Awesome” became our most successful video this year. It had a huge impact and inspired many of you to quit smoking for good. Nothing could make us happier.”
As the calendar neared completion, Kurzgesagt continued to engage their audience with thought-provoking content. They asked the big questions, like “Do you have free will?” and “Is AI Humanity’s Final Invention?” These videos not only showcased the team’s intellectual curiosity, but also their ability to tackle complex topics in an accessible and engaging way.
The Finished Product
Finally, in September, the Kurzgesagt team held the first copy of the finished 1225 Human Era Calendar in their hands. They were truly happy with the result – not just the vibrant illustrations, the high-quality paper, or the shiny cover, but the fact that it represented such an important part of their shared human history.
“It’s not just the vibrant illustrations, the high quality paper or the shiny cover – it’s the fact that it represents such an important part of our shared human history.”
For the Kurzgesagt team, this calendar holds all the memories of an exciting and challenging year. They may be a bit biased, but they truly believe it’s the best product they’ve ever made. And their audience seems to agree – the comments and messages they’ve received show that for many, getting the Human Era Calendar has become a yearly tradition and a daily source of inspiration.
